How to Fix Vaper's Tongue
Quickly, before we explain how to fix vaper's tongue, we should explain what exactly vaper's tongue is and what causes it. "Vaper's Tongue" is a condition where unexpectedly, a vaper will experience reduced or completely diminished flavors while vaping. If you've been vaping longer than a couple of months, there's a good chance you've experienced Vaper's Tongue at least once before.
What causes Vaper's Tongue?
Vaper's Tongue has a variety of possible causes like:
Dehydration is one of the leading causes of vaper's tongue. Most people don't understand the importance of staying properly hydrated while vaping, and thus they become dehydrated without even knowing it. You can help ward off dehydration by simply drinking a glass or two of water, or a hydration specific beverage like Coconut Water or Powerade.
2. Vaping The Same Flavor For Too Long
You finally found a flavor of e-liquid that you just LOVE. You vape it exclusively day after day after day and all is well until one day, you suddenly can't taste it anymore. Sound familiar? Aside from dehydration, this is probably the most common cause of vaper's tongue. Sometimes you just need to take a break from your favorite flavor to allow your taste buds some time to "reset".
3. Recently Switched From Smoking
We all know by now that cigarettes are extremely bad for your overall health. There are so many bad side effects of cigarette smoke that people often aren't familiar with all of them. Traditional combustible tobacco can damage your taste and smell receptors. This is primarily an issue if you're a dual user (actively using both cigarettes and vaping), so this may not apply to you.
We're not doctors, and we don't claim to be, so take this with a grain of salt. Certain medications can inhibit your sense of taste and smell, so if you're taking a medication like Captopril, Lithium, Penicillamine or Rifampin to name a few, this may have an effect on your taste.
5. Stress and/or Anxiety
Stress and anxiety have been shown to causes some tastes to change. Some people even experience changes in taste when they do not feel other symptoms of stress or anxiety. We aren't sure of exactly how/why stress and anxiety affect your sense of taste but it's commonly believed that anxiety and stress can play an important role in properly smelling and tasting things.
How to Get Rid of Vaper's Tongue
Medical issues aside, there are a few extremely simple ways to combat vaper's tongue:
1. Drink More Water
As discussed above, dehydration is one of the leading causes of vaper's tongue, so be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day, and remember to drink water while you vape to minimize potential side effects.
2. Change Your Flavor
I know you LOVE that flavor...but change can be beneficial to ensure you can continue to taste your favorites for a long time to come. Try switching things up a bit by trying not just a different flavor, but a different kind of flavor. For example, if you love Strawberry Milk flavors, consider flipping things on their head and trying Menthol Fruit flavor, or a Tobacco flavor. You don't have to commit to a 120ml of a flavor you don't like, but try something new for a few days and it will likely help out.
3. Inhale the Smell of Fresh Coffee Beans
Sounds weird, right? Well, surprisingly it works a majority of the time. If you're properly hydrated and you've switched up your flavor, but you still can't seem to get your taste back to normal, grab a bag of fresh coffee beans and stick your nose in it to help reset your sense of taste and smell. This technique is used by professional tasters of all kinds to help out with this same issue.
4. Drink Lemon Juice (or suck on a lemon)
Lemon juice is especially bitter, and while it may not be the most pleasant thing to drink it can definitely help reset your palate. So, grab some pure lemon juice from your fridge or go find a fresh lemon to cut open and try this method.
5. Dental Hygiene
Practicing proper dental hygiene can be foundational to ensuring your taste buds work as well as possible. Aside from just brushing your teeth, try rinsing your mouth with mouthwash a few times. If that doesn't work, try using a tongue scraper or tongue scrubber of some sort to ensure your tongue is as clean as possible.
Hopefully, this article helped point you in the right direction so that you can tackle your vaper's tongue head on, and continue to enjoy all of your favorite flavors without issue.
