The Real Cost of Vaping
Let’s be honest…we all like saving money. If you want to save money, you must first analyze where your money is spent. Unfortunately, we’re not accountants…but we do know vaping, and we want to help you understand the ways you might be able to save money when it comes down to it.
We have run a complete cost comparison for the category of pod style devices that use nicotine salts with the aim of helping some people find more cost-effective alternatives. We all know the JUUL…wildly popular, sold in 7/11’s and gas stations across the country and often the first recommendation when someone considers vaping to quit smoking.
The JUUL is an awesome invention and we believe it truly helps people kick tobacco for good, but it’s far from the most cost-effective solution. Take a look at the chart below:
This chart was made using the following data: an average of 1ML of e-liquid consumed per day, over the course of 30 days. This comes out to either 1/30th of a bottle of nic salts, one ZiiP pod or just over one JUUL pod per day. For the refillable system category, we also included the price of 3 refillable pods at approximately $5 each.
As you can see, using a JUUL on a daily basis with JUUL brand pods is expensive…we’re talking an average of $171 per month. Get this…if you’re in California and you buy your pods from a CA-based business, that number jumps all the way up to $267 a month. That’s a lot. In fact, that’s more expensive than a pack of cigarettes per day at $8 per pack.
Why is the JUUL so popular?
The JUUL has gained infamy through celebrity endorsements, availability practically everywhere, news headlines, word of mouth and more. It’s no secret that JUUL is worth nearly $16,000,000,000…yeah, $16 BILLION dollars. You can find a JUUL in almost any gas station and convenience store across the nation. It’s a buzzword and it’s a trendy device to use.
It’s also really effective at helping people quit smoking, but we’re not so sure if it’s a proper long-term solution. At a yearly cost of over $3,000 (in CA)…it can quickly become a problem for the average vaper.
What other options are there?
There are TONS of alternatives that are all designed to use the same 5% (or less) nicotine salt e-liquid, rendering the same effect but at a fraction of the cost. Take for example an Aspire Breeze 2: The device itself is about $35 and you can pick up a pack of 5 coils (easily a months worth) for $10. Add a 30ml bottle of nicotine salt and that’s a $30 per month cost versus $171…for the same results. Plus, with refillable systems, you can choose from hundreds of different flavors and nicotine strengths.
Or, if you really like the simplicity of the JUUL, but you’re not a fan of the bill…you can consider using 3rd part pod alternatives, like ZiiP Pods, which would run you about $83 per month…an $88 monthly savings over JUUL pods.
Do we hate the JUUL?
Absolutely NOT. The JUUL is an amazing device. We just know it has its time and place, and we don’t believe that it’s the best long-term option available…unless you enjoy wasting money. Some people have tighter budgets than others and to those people, we know that saving even $10 or $20 a month can make a difference, so we want you to be informed about all the choices you have rather than thinking you only have one option.
I can just refill my JUUL pods, it’s super easy!
Sure you can. But why bother refilling 0.7ml pods with wicks and coils designed for a single use when you can use that same skillset to refill a device that holds more e-liquid, has longer battery life and better flavor? If you’re going to be refilling a device, why not choose a bigger and better one?
JUUL pods are not designed to be refilled, but many people have found ways to refill them by using razor blades and tweezers to take them apart like scientists in a laboratory. If that’s what floats your boat, have at it…but just know, there are much easier options.
The moral of the story
At the end of the day, the choice is yours. If you like the JUUL, use it. If you like the Suorin Air, use that. If you like the Mi-Pod, go for it. We just want you to be informed about all the potential options you have so that you can make a smarter decision when it comes time for you to get a new device. We hope this article helped provide some insight into how much vaping can actually cost, as well as ways to offset that cost exponentially.
